Itinerary

The adventure begins in Wattala, a coastal suburb of Colombo. Upon arrival, you'll be transferred to your hotel, where the rest of the day is yours to unwind and get settled. You can take it easy and enjoy the hotel facilities, or explore the surrounding area at your leisure.

After breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive (approximately four hours) through coconut palms, paddy fields, and banana plantations to reach Sigiriya, where we check into our hotel for the next few nights.

In the afternoon, we take on the Sigiriya rock fortress, also known as Lion Rock. This impressive 5th-century fortress, built as a refuge from invaders, rises 655ft (200m) above the plains. From the base, where water gardens and a moat surround the site, we climb a series of steep steps and gangways, passing rock portraits of native maidens holding flowers and temple offerings. At the summit, we find the remains of the King’s Summer Palace, offering panoramic views that stretch for miles.

After the descent, relax and cool off by the hotel pool as the day winds down.

This morning, we take a short transfer (just over an hour) to Polonnaruwa, the 10th-century capital of Sri Lanka. Upon arrival, we swap our transport for bicycles and embark on a cycle tour of this ancient Sinhalese capital.

Polonnaruwa is home to numerous Buddhist relics and ruins, many of which date back over a thousand years to when Sinhalese culture was at its peak. After the capital was moved from Anuradhapura in the 12th century to avoid invasions from southern India, Polonnaruwa flourished. As a result, the ruins here are better preserved and younger than those at Anuradhapura. At a leisurely pace, we’ll cycle through the city, taking in the temples, palaces, massive dagobas (Buddhist stupas), and incredible Buddhist sculptures.

We stop for lunch in a rural village, where we can sample traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, a great opportunity to experience the local flavors.

In the afternoon, we visit Minneriya National Park, where we board 4x4s for a safari to observe elephants in their natural habitat. While elephants can be seen throughout the year, Minneriya is especially famous for the “Gathering,” a seasonal event that occurs between July and September, when hundreds of elephants congregate around the reservoir, offering an unforgettable wildlife spectacle.

Today, we head to Dambulla, just a 30-minute drive from the hotel, to visit the stunning Cave Temple, one of Sri Lanka’s most impressive sights. This sacred site consists of five caves, filled with ancient Buddhist murals and over 150 statues. The temple dates back to the first century BCE, showcasing both cultural and spiritual significance.

After exploring Dambulla, we take a short drive to Hiriwaduna, a village in the nearby town of Habarana. Surrounded by lush landscapes, we’ll experience the warmth of local hospitality as we participate in daily village activities. We’ll ride a hand-tractor (or land-master), learn traditional fishing methods, and stroll through the scenic paddy fields. This offers us a wonderful insight into rural life and its simplicity.

Following our village visit, we return to the hotel, where you can relax and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Today, we journey into the hills to the charming town of Kandy. En route, we make a stop at a spice garden near Matale, where we’ll discover the various spices and herbs grown in the region. It’s also a great opportunity to purchase fresh spices, massage oils, and Ayurvedic medicines.

Once we arrive in Kandy, a picturesque lakeside town, you’ll have some free time to unwind. After the more active days in Sigiriya, take the afternoon to relax at the hotel or leisurely stroll into the town. You can explore the local market stalls, enjoy the scenic beauty of the lake, or simply soak in the tranquil atmosphere of Kandy.

This morning, we venture out to explore Kandy city and visit the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden. Famous for its extensive collection of orchids endemic to Sri Lanka and over 4,000 different plant species, the garden stretches over 147 acres (60 hectares) and is nestled next to the Mahaweli River.

In the afternoon, we visit the Temple of the Tooth, home to Sri Lanka's most significant Buddhist relic—the Tooth of Buddha. This relic, taken from the Buddha's funeral pyre in 543 BCE, was brought to Sri Lanka in the fourth century CE. Every day, hundreds of worshippers visit the temple, and for those traveling during July/August, we may have the chance to witness the magnificent Kandy Perahera festival (subject to timing).

Afterward, we drive to a scenic viewpoint overlooking Kandy, where we’ll see a giant Buddha statue. We’ll also stop at a gem museum to learn about the traditional methods of gem extraction used in Sri Lanka.

In the evening, there’s an optional opportunity to experience a lively performance of Kandyan Dancing and fire walking, showcasing the rich cultural traditions of the region.

This morning, we embark on a scenic three-hour train ride through the misty tea hills, heading towards Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as "Little England." Located at 6,128ft (1,868m) above sea level, this charming town was once a favored cool retreat for the British.

Upon arrival, we visit a tea plantation and factory, where we’ll learn about the fascinating process of turning raw green leaves into the iconic "Ceylon Tea." We’ll also have the opportunity to savor a cup of pure, freshly brewed tea.

After the visit, there’s time to explore Nuwara Eliya itself. The town is renowned for its Colonial-era bungalows and Tudor-style hotels, set against a backdrop of lush green hillsides and a tranquil lake, offering a picturesque setting to unwind and take in the beauty of the area.

After breakfast, we set off for Kitulgala, a charming town nestled in Sri Lanka's Sabaragamuwa Province. Known for its stunning landscapes, lush greenery, and the Kelani River, Kitulgala is also famous for its water-based activities.

Upon arrival, we visit the iconic bridge, a historical landmark that became internationally renowned after its role in the 1957 epic war film The Bridge on the River Kwai, directed by David Lean. While the movie is set in Thailand, it was actually filmed in Sri Lanka, with the Kitulgala bridge serving as a key location in the film.

If you're looking for an adventure, you can opt for white-water rafting on the Kelani River. The rafting experience, available at an additional cost, lasts up to 1.5 hours and offers two options: gentle or wild water (Grade III rapids), depending on your preference. Please note, rafting is subject to water levels, and sometimes the activity may not be available if conditions aren't suitable. A minimum of four people is required for this excursion.

In the late afternoon, we drive to Colombo, where we check into our hotel for the night.

After breakfast, the trip comes to a close. It’s been an enriching adventure full of cultural discoveries. If you’re in the mood for some relaxation, feel free to speak to your sales representative about adding a beach extension to Weligama or Hikkaduwa for some extra time by the sea. Alternatively, you can extend your journey even further with a Maldives getaway for a tropical retreat. Safe travels!
